Time to hire an accountant? When it comes to choosing the right accountant for the job, there are a few things to consider. Below are just a few tips to help you make the right choice.

Read online reviews left by customers

Reading online reviews is a good way to tell how trusted an accountant is. The best accountants will typically have overwhelmingly positive reviews on Google and Yelp. Be wary of companies that have relatively less positive reviews or no reviews at all. The number of reviews and the date of these reviews is also worth noting – you may want to think twice before working with an accountancy firm that has had lots of positive reviews in the past, but a few negative reviews recently.

Choose an accountant that’s chartered/certified

It’s worth also looking out for credentials to determine whether an accountant is trustworthy. Accountants that are ‘chartered’ are recognised by a national body as meeting a certain level of expertise. Other certificates and awards are also worth looking out for – most accountants will have these displayed on their website. If you can’t find any proof or certification, you may want to be cautious about working with such an accountant.

Make sure they understand your industry

Some accountants may have more experience in certain industries than others. In fact, some may specialize in serving certain industries such as exclusively offering dental bookkeeping. It’s important that you choose an accountant that knows your industry so that you know you’re getting the most thorough and accurate service possible. Choose to work with an accountant that has no experience and there could be a greater risk of errors and oversights.

Consider whether you need a local accountant

You don’t have to hire an accountant that is based locally. Hiring a local accountant does mean that you can meet up in-person, however you may find that you can do all your communication via phone, email or video call. It is likely to depend on whether you are a local business and whether you would feel more comfortable discussing financial matters in person. Some people find that not having to outsource locally gives them freedom to choose from a greater range of accountants, which could possibly include more niche accountants.

Compare rates of different accountants

Pricing is very important when hiring an accountant. Some accountants may charge less than others, so it’s worth shopping around for quotes. There are accountants out there that cater to smaller businesses and typically charge much lower rates. Of course, if you run a larger business, you may not be able to work with these accountants and take advantage of these rates. Typically accountant rates are personalized to each client, so be prepared to reach out to a few different accountants. Some may be willing to negotiate pricing, while others may have more rigid fees.
