For anybody wanting to set up a business, there has to be a lot of creativity and bending of the rules. But when you are setting up a creative business, whether it’s a design studio, a theater company, or a media production company, there will always be that battle between creativity and business acumen. And for a lot of people, it can be hard to make the two work together, but this is essential. But how can you do this effectively?

A Division Of Labor

What can be difficult, especially for those people who are setting a business purely for their creative endeavors, is that they can have a lack of perspective. A lot of people create a business for their own needs. And as such, this results in a lack of foresight in key business areas. This is, arguably, why so many companies go under. So, if this is you, and you’re looking to create a business that’s aligned to your passions, you may want to put your passions to one side while you get the essentials up and running. And when we’re looking at the essentials to get a company up and running, it’s about the right people for the job. As such, if you don’t have the necessary knowledge, can you find it? Either do it yourself or find the right people to do it for you. But then, this means you’ve got to have a working relationship with these people. And it’s not just so they can serve your needs, but you have to serve them as well. A division of labor isn’t just for your benefit; it’s to help the company grow. As such, business partners become a very essential component because you can balance each other out. Be careful, because these sorts of relationships need to be deep-rooted. And when there are money problems or creative differences, these are things that can override any form of common sense, and when a business goes under because of a poor working relationship, the seeds are usually sown very early on.

Perception Of The Bigger Picture

Everybody has a particular way of working, and this suits their needs. But when we are in charge of a company, something that’s trading, making money, and have employees and people who are dependent on this, it’s about seeing the bigger picture and how it can be improved. And it’s not just about the daily processes that can make a business work better; it’s about so many different components. And this is where you can really learn what skills you have or, rather, what you don’t have. They say if you want to learn how to build a house, build one. And this can throw up so many differences between you and your employees, or if you’re by yourself, exactly how many things you aren’t sufficiently skilled in. Running a business of any sort is about turning the mirror onto yourself, and making it a process of learning. But what helps us in this respect, rather than continually pointing out to ourselves where we are weak, is what we can do to benefit the business. After all, this is the thing that’s more important than us at this point. We can talk about work-life balance and a sense of fulfillment later on, but when you’re trying to get something up and running, you have to make sure that the business’ needs are fulfilled. You can only do this by seeing the bigger picture. The bigger picture is such a hard thing to get your head around, especially when you’re used to seeing one aspect. And this is where your problem-solving skills can increase and improve no end. Because by seeing the bigger picture, you will learn how to make each piece of the puzzle work together effectively. And from a creative perspective, the little administrative touches, and the supply chain relationships can be a very uninteresting aspect. But these relationships, whether it’s a design agency and you need to use stationery or photocopying companies like FilmSource or you are a small store and you need essential accounting software like QuickBooks, whatever the need is, understanding how it all fits into the bigger picture isn’t just an essential way for you to keep your eye on the business, it’s going to actually give you that extra motivation to complete the more boring tasks.

A Nurturing Environment

And as businesses need to nurture creative talent, it can always be difficult to get the balance of right. It depends on your perception of creativity. If you want someone who is creative and you’re looking to make a business to fit your passions, you realize that the art of creativity isn’t a 9 to 5 existence. Providing that nurturing environment for creators to create is difficult. And even if you are a creative person and you want to provide that nurturing environments for other creatives, you realize that you have to impose deadlines and essential limitations from time to time. But what helps is that you give them the freedom in which to do their work, without them thinking that there is a deadline. Giving them that time to play and to delve deep into their psyche is an essential component of coming up with the goods. And when you are in charge of a business, it can be difficult to marry the two ideas. And this is why some businesses struggle to realize their vision because they get bound by the constraints. But if we can learn anything from marketing agencies and other creative businesses, is that there is a time and a place for creativity, but also business acumen. And if you are running your own creative business, you’ve got to learn how to effectively swap both personalities.

Because a lot of people have this creative spark, it’s natural that they look to establish a business that is a logical extension of their passions. But what we soon realize is that these sort of endeavors become difficult to keep as a passionate approach, because these essential components, like administration, funding, and the overall practicalities will take precedent now and again. Running a creative business isn’t all fun and games, but it can certainly be a rewarding one.
