Hiring is by far one of the most important things that you do as an entrepreneur. If you run a small business then each new hire will have a huge impact on your company. It will also influence your company culture too. The stakes are high when you run a small company, so you need to make sure that your new hires are as engaged, committed and passionate as you are. You need great people who are willing to support you and you also need to make sure that you are always hiring for the right reasons too.

Be Clear about the Role

People often search for roles based on keywords or even industries. As a hiring manager, you have to keep things like this in mind. You need to be descriptive and you also need to be clear and concise. Within the listing, make sure that you detail any of the day-to-day tasks that will be required of your team. Make sure that you also detail how the role is going to fit into the company goals and key information. Salary expectations should be set and you also need to write down potential skills that will be required. If possible, you need to help potential applicants to see that this is in fact an important position for your team, as well as showing them how they could make a difference. If you can, make it easy for people to really get to know you and your business model and ensure you are meeting their needs. As a general rule, your top talent will want the option of being able to crunch numbers when they are having a coffee at the local coffee shop. They also want to be able to stay at home and wear their slippers all day. At the end of the day, as long as your team has the option of being able to meet their goals and collaborate on the go, you should be fine.

Show your Culture

If possible, you need to showcase your culture and you also need to make your values as clear as possible. When the time comes for you to hire, keep in mind that skills can be taught but you cannot teach attitude and personality. If you can, you need to find someone who is resilient and who understands how to navigate conflict as well as difficult situations. Look for individuals who have a lot of integrity and make sure that you are building everything on a foundation of trust. If you can do this then you will be able to get a good sense of their personality and this can help more than you realize. You need to try and work so you can get a good idea of what personality the candidate has and you also need to lighten the mood by having good interview questions. Don’t take yourself too seriously and have a bit of fun. Do Not Settle

The last thing you want to do when hiring new team members is settle for less than the best. Finding the right candidate may take a little bit of legwork but at the same time, it can also be a good way for you to expand your business. You have to look for good candidates at every level if you can because if you don’t then you may find that your business ends up being compromised with every hire you make. You are also going to be spending a lot of time with your new hire in an office that is quite small. Do not underestimate the importance of simply liking someone and then hiring them based on that. Look for people who you want to work with on a regular basis and take note of whether or not you are going to be excited about the prospect of working with them too.
